How to Clean your Fabric Sofa

Category : Sofa care

The sofa is probably one of the most used pieces of furniture in the home. Many of us eat dinner in front of the TV whilst sat on our sofas; we sit on our sofas to watch a film whilst munching on snacks; we put our feet up on the sofa after a long day; and the family dog makes himself at home on the sofa too. It’s a piece of furniture that sees a lot of action, so it needs a lot of care. Here are some top tips to help you keep your fabric upholstered sofa clean:

  • Regular vacuuming – Once a week whilst you’re running the vacuum around your living room give your sofa a little TLC. Using your vacuum’s pointed nozzle or brush attachment make sure you get in to all of the nooks and crannies as this is where dust, dirt and food gathers. If the cushions are detachable then remove them and vacuum the area before replacing them.
  • Clean loose covers – If your cushions are detachable then chances are the covers will come off them so that you can wash them. Check the manufacturer’s instructions in case they are dry-clean only. If they are machine washable then follow the instructions and wash accordingly. Put the covers back onto the cushions while they’re still ever so slightly damp as this will help them to regain their shape and fit properly.
  • Clean fixed covers – One of the best things for cleaning the washable fixed covers on a fabric sofa is baby wipes! They’re just the right amount of damp with a hint of soap, and the area will dry very quickly afterwards. You could also use a mild solution of washing-up liquid or laundry detergent mixed with warm water. Make sure the cloth is well wrung out first though as you don’t want the upholstery to be saturated with water, just dampened on the surface. Keep the room well aired to dry your sofa quickly after cleaning, or get the hairdryer out for even quicker results!
